How to Train for the Cold When You Live Somewhere Hot
TL;DR. You can’t train your body to be meaningfully warmer in the cold — that’s a myth. What you can train is your body’s panic response to cold, so you don’t gasp, tense up, and lose your head the first time it hits you. Do that with gradual cold habituation (cold showers, built up slowly). Then stay warm the way armies do: layers, staying dry, and eating. Skip the Wim Hof breathing theatrics — they add real danger and no trek benefit.

Here’s the problem we’re solving. We’re training in Shah Alam, where it rarely drops below 24°C, for a pass in Nepal — Thorong La, 5,416 m — where it can sit well below freezing at dawn. Going from permanent summer to that is one of the biggest gaps between a Malaysian body and a Himalayan trek. So “how do I toughen up for the cold?” is a fair question.
But the honest answer isn’t the one most cold-plunge content gives you.
First, the honest truth: what cold training can and can’t do
Cold training mainly changes how your body reacts to cold — not how warm it stays. Repeated cold exposure blunts the “cold-shock response” (the involuntary gasp, hyperventilation, and spike in heart rate when you hit cold). That’s genuinely useful: it means you stay calm and functional instead of panicking. What it does not do is make you measurably warmer at altitude. Human cold adaptation is modest; you will not out-tough −15°C with willpower.
That matters because it tells you where to spend your effort. Some of it goes into habituating your response. Most of it goes into the boring stuff that actually keeps you warm — which we’ll get to.
”Withstanding cold” is really two separate skills
People blur these together, and that’s why they train the wrong thing:
- Habituating your response — so cold doesn’t shock or scare you, and you can think and move when it’s cold. This is what cold showers train.
- Staying warm in the field — thermoregulation through clothing, dryness, fuel, and movement. This is what keeps you alive on the trail, and it’s 90% kit and behaviour, not physiology.
You want both. Most people only chase #1 because it feels hardcore, and neglect #2, which is the one that actually matters at 5,000 m.
The methods, ranked by what actually helps
1. Gradual cold habituation — start here
This is the evidence-based core, and it’s unglamorous: repeated, brief, controlled cold exposure. A cool-to-cold finish on your shower, built up gradually over weeks. The cold-shock response fades after a handful of exposures — you stop gasping, your breathing settles faster, and cold stops feeling like an emergency.
For a trekker, that’s the whole point. When you crawl out of a teahouse sleeping bag into a freezing morning to start the Thorong La climb, you want a body that goes “cold” and gets on with it — not one that panics. That’s trainable, it’s free, and it’s reasonably safe done sensibly.
(First-hand: this is the protocol we’re running now — ending showers cold and slowly extending the time. It’s not comfortable. It’s not supposed to be. But the difference in how you meet cold after a few weeks is real and obvious.)
2. The military approach — what actually keeps you warm
Here’s the one that surprises people. Armies that fight in extreme cold do not rely on toughening soldiers up to stay warm. They rely on systems. The classic doctrine is the C.O.L.D. principle:
- C — keep clothing Clean (dirty, compressed insulation stops insulating)
- O — avoid Overheating (sweat is the enemy; damp clothing chills you fast)
- L — wear Loose layers (trapped air is the insulation; you add and shed layers constantly)
- D — keep Dry (wet kills warmth — cold water pulls heat from you far faster than cold air)
Add to that: eat constantly (your body heats itself by burning fuel), stay hydrated, keep moving, and check on each other. None of it is heroic. All of it is what actually keeps you warm — and it reinforces the honest thesis: warmth is layers, dryness, and calories, not hardness. The army basically proves the point.

3. The Wim Hof method — the honest verdict
You’ll see Wim Hof everywhere, so let’s be straight about it. The method is breathing (a form of controlled hyperventilation) + cold + mindset. Our verdict, in three parts:
- The cold part works — but only because it is cold habituation (method 1). There’s nothing magic in it that a plain cold shower doesn’t give you.
- The big claims are weak. A 2024 systematic review (PLOS ONE) of the method concluded the studies are low quality and the supposed benefits — immune boost, fat loss, reduced inflammation — can’t be confirmed without much better research.
- The breathing is genuinely dangerous near water. The hyperventilation can make you black out, and multiple drownings have been linked to people doing the breathing in or near water — including a documented case of a 17-year-old who drowned in a pool. The rule, which even Wim Hof’s own materials state: never do the breathing in or near water. Sudden cold immersion can also trigger dangerous heart-rhythm problems.
So for a trekker: borrow the cold-habituation idea, ignore the breathing theatrics. They add risk and offer nothing your trek actually needs.
Read this before you start: safety
Cold exposure is not automatically safe, and “tough it out” is bad advice. Before you do any of this:
- See a doctor first if you have any heart condition, high blood pressure, or are pregnant. Cold shock stresses the heart and can trigger arrhythmias.
- Never do breathing exercises (hyperventilation or breath-holds) in or near water. This is how people drown. No exceptions.
- Never do cold-water immersion alone. Cold shock can incapacitate you in seconds.
- Build up gradually. The danger is in sudden, extreme, prolonged exposure — not in a cool shower.
- Watch for “afterdrop” and hypothermia — feeling colder after you get out, shivering you can’t stop, confusion, slurred speech. Warm up actively and get help if it doesn’t settle.
- If you have an existing injury or condition, this is general education, not a treatment plan — get a professional’s advice for your situation.
Cold should make you uncomfortable. It should never make you dizzy, numb to the point of losing function, or frightened in a way you can’t control. If it does, you’ve gone too far.
A sane way to build cold tolerance before a trek
The goal is a calm cold response by the time you fly, not a party trick. Conservative and gradual beats heroic and risky every time:
- End your normal warm shower with a short burst of cool water — start with what you can tolerate, somewhere comfortable and seated if needed.
- Extend the cold finish slowly over weeks as the gasp reflex fades. The progress is the gasp going away, not the clock.
- Do it consistently rather than intensely. Frequent and mild beats rare and brutal.
- Pair it with the real work: rehearse your layering, train in the cool of early morning, and get used to moving and eating in the cold.

The bottom line
Train your reaction to cold with gradual habituation. Stay warm the army way — layers, dry, fuel. Treat Wim Hof’s cold as ordinary habituation and its breathing as unnecessary risk you should keep far from water. Do that and you’ll meet a freezing Himalayan dawn calm and capable — which, honestly, is all “withstanding cold” really means.
